Natural Deodorants That Really Work

Are you still on with your detective work for chemical and aluminum-free deodorants? Has your trial-and-error method for testing brands that claim to be natural satisfied you? Now that we’re talking about deodorants, you’re definitely looking for one that doesn’t make you stink (some brands do!) and keep you dry. But let’s be clear with some terms. Some products are just plain deodorants, which mean that they keep you odor-free all day but don’t spare you from the damp underarm area. Antiperspirants – well as the word suggests, works by clogging the pores preventing the release of perspiration. Conventional deodorants (and antiperspirants) work this way, but how safe are they? There has been a growing concern for deodorant products that contain aluminum that potentially leaves long-term side effects which could contribute to degenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

So probably the question that pops out of your head may be “How do I know if the deodorant is safe?” First, you would want to stay away from deodorants that contain aluminum. Studies suggest that especially on shaved underarms, aluminum easily travels through the lymphatic system after it has been absorbed. Check for compounds that has names like aluminum chlorohydrate, ammonium aluminum sulfate, potassium aluminum sulfate and aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydres gly. Second, check for parabens. While parabens have antimicrobial properties, these toluene-derivatives (a toxic petroleum-based compound) can mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal activities. Estrogen has been shown to contribute to the development of cancer cells.

Many deodorant products claiming to be “natural” are not necessarily safe. Besides, they have to be tested to justify the claim, which unfortunately, doesn’t really happen. Smart consumers opt to check for ingredients. Here’s a tip: If you cannot read the ingredient regard it as unsafe. The organic certification should also be done by a third party. So what brands are recognized as true for their natural claims and are proven to really work? The following are green deodorant products claimed by critics and product reviewers:

Dr. Hauschka ($15-$20) – This roll-on is formulated with zinc ricinileate which reduces odor without disrupting the normal physiology of the skin. It contains natural extracts of witch hazel and sage and comes with the fresh citrus scent from pure essential oils.

Weleda ($10-$15) – This unisex non-aerosol spray helps eliminate the causes of body odor using the astringent properties of organic sage and tea tree leaf oil blended with other essential oils. It does not contain aluminum that could lead to long-term untoward side effects.

Erbaviva ($15-$18) – Coming with a delicate blend of organic extracts of sage, jasmine, grapefruit, lemon, patchouli and tea tree oils, this aluminum-free deodorant product helps ward off bacterial without clogging the skin pores.

Aubrey Organics ($7-$10) – The product contained in a recyclable container is biodegradable and is made with natural grain alcohol and witch hazel extract. Other combined ingredients include arnica flower extract, calamine, Vitamin E, calendula oil and pine needle oil.

Crystal ($5-$8)– This deodorant eliminates body odor with 100 percent natural mineral salts. It is fragrance-free, hypo-allergenic, leaves no white residue.

Lafe’s ($4-$7) – A natural deodorant that comes with a blend of mineral salts, hemp oil and aloe vera which provides 24 hour deodorant protection. The hemp oil possesses antimicrobial properties that helps eliminate odor-causing bacteria. This product is vegan and does not contain aluminum and parabens.

Miessence ($9-$10) – Active persons enjoy this formula, and it comes with a blend of intense floral and citrus aromas.

Burt’s Bees ($7-$10) – This deodorant allows the natural detoxification through sweating, but its delicate mixture of essential oils like sage, lemon and lavender neutralizes odor.
