Follow Your Bliss
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle” – Steve Jobs
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing it is stupid” – Albert Einstein
15 years ago I was an acceptable Quality Engineer in a Manufacturing Company and I HATED my job. I dreaded getting up in the morning and dragged through the day.
I also struggled with debilitating panic disorder and more often than not I was sick and I always felt exhausted.
Today I spend my days doing what I love, creating a monetary income that is often significantly more than what I was making as a Professional Engineer, and I cannot remember the last time I suffered with cold symptoms.
Life is amazing.
And I know it can be amazing for you as well….
Recently I sat down and recorded conversations with eleven of the happiest, most successful people in my life. Each one is a friend and each one is following their own path.
Melissa is an artist
Sami a college student and professional volunteer
Bill a Natural Health Nut
Anik an Entrepreneur and teacher
As the conversations continued it became more and more apparent that as different as they all were, they all had 6 characteristics that they had in common and that really set them apart from many of the other people in my life.
The one that I want to highlight here is that they all love what they do. Each one lit up when they talked about how they spend their days.
For us (yes, I am happy to say me too :-)) Monday mornings are our favorite time of the week.
Take a moment now, close your eyes and picture what that must be like. Investing your time in a job that….
- Has you looking forward to getting up in the morning
- That brings you an income that exceeds what you are currently making
- That heals your body, brightens your smile, opens your heart.
I suspect that I am not the only one who was taught that there are more important things then “being happy”. The truth is that prioritizing our happiness, bringing it into every aspect of our life, is the ONLY way to truly live a successful life.
Happy people are healthier, more prosperous, and they have much more fulfilling relationships.
Hopefully by this time I have you shaking your head yes, I understand that happy people are more successful.
That is the first key step…
Agreeing that following your bliss (being happy) is critical to success will give you the motivation you require for the next step, which is….
To choose to make being happy a priority; in your career, your relationships, your life.
Just choose…
Then once you choose stay open to what is going on around you. Watch your reactions, and stay on alert looking for those opportunities that have you thinking “wouldn’t that be nice”.
And then act. Say yes where in the past you may have hesitated. Take a class or join a club simply because you want to. Continue to look for more and more ways to feel good and more and more ways will present themselves.
Follow your bliss and success, happiness, health will be yours.
