Coenzyme Q10 Side Effects
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is one of the most popular supplements available today. If you are thinking about doing coq10 supplementation, you may be wondering if there are any side effects.
Typically, about 100 mg per day is consumed in order to benefit from the antioxidant properties of CoQ10. Research has shown that that intakes up to 1200 mg/day are safe and even as high as 3600 mg per day are well tolerated by most people although experts don’t recommend taking that much.
The following adverse side effects have been reported with most of them only being reported only in people taking higher doses.
Gastrointestinal Effects
Side effects in lower to medium dosages of CoQ10 are usually mild and typically involve gastrointestinal discomfort such as heartburn, diarrhea, upper abdominal pain, and nausea.
Insomnia
Some people taking high doses have reported mild insomnia.
Headache
Some people have reported headaches, dizziness, irritability, and light sensitivity.
Any side effects from taking the supplements may take weeks or months to occur. There are many different formulations of CoQ10 on the market. If one brand is causing mild side effects in an individual, another brand may be different enough to have no side effects at all.
CoQ10 may interfere with certain drugs so it is important to check with a doctor or pharmacist before adding CoQ10 to your daily supplement regime.
